AVADirect Clevo X7200 (World’s Fastest Laptop)

The AVADirect Clevo X7200 claims to be the “world’s fastest laptop”, with up to a six-core Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition processor, Nvidia GeForce 580M graphics, and ultra fast solid state drive.  However, this kind of power does come at a cost, with a large and heavy frame, tiny battery life, and expensive price tag.

AVADirect are an American reseller of custom notebooks, meaning that they purchase frames from other companies and add their own processor, graphics, and other components.  The X7200 is based on a Clevo chassis and uses Intel’s X58 chipset.

The design of the AVADirect Clevo X7200 is big and bold, with little attention paid to true mobility.  Make no mistake, this is a power gaming computer, and at 13.5 pounds, it is not the kind of notebook you are going to want to lug around all day long.  The aluminium lid features a tribal style tattoo design with blue LED backlighting, which while cool, does not match the gaming bling of Alienware and other dedicated gaming machines.

The screen is a 17.3 inch TN panel display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, and the graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 580M 2GB GDDR5.  Connectivity is also exceptional, with three USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, eSATA, DVI, HDMI, Ethernet, and pretty much everything else you can think of.  However, there is no ExpressCard slot, which is a bit of a surprise.

The keyboard and touchpad are pretty standard, although the lack of a backlit keyboard is another surprising omission – especially in a gaming machine in this price range.  The major down side of having a computer this powerful is the battery life limitations, with the AVADirect Clevo X7200 only operational on battery for a little over an hour.  No, that is not a mistake, ONE hour.  Not only that however, but the 300W power brick that it uses looks absolutely massive.

The AVADirect Clevo X7200 is super powerful, and may very well be the “world’s fastest laptop” as claimed.  However, consumers will have to make a number of compromises if they want a computer with this title.  While the weight, size, and even pathetic battery life specs are almost expected with this kind of computer, the lack of little things like a backlit keyboard and an ExpressCard slot are surprising.

The AVADirect Clevo X7200 is on sale directly from AVADirect at prices starting from $2129.22 and going up to almost $4000, depending on configuration.
