The Acer Iconia Tab A100 series Tablets

Acer has announced the Iconia Tab A100 series, the first 7 inch tablet models in the Iconia line.  Available now in the US, the A100 series will run Android 3.2 and weigh less than one pound each.

There are two different models of the Iconia Tab A100 series available, an 8GB version on sale for $330 and a 16GB version for $350.  Both models are based on Nvidia dual-core processors with 1GB of RAM, which integrate with an Ultra Low-Power GeForce GPU.

The 7 inch screen on the A100 series features a resolution of 1024 x 600, featuring a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 75 degree viewing angle.  The display is a multitouch TFT WSVGA, which is used on many netbooks, tablets, and ultraportable computers, and is a wide version of Super VGA.

In terms of connectivity, the A100 comes with 802.11 a/b/g/n, microUSB, WiFi, Bluetooth, a microSD card, HDMI, and dual display support.  These tablets can also be used as game controllers, in what is becoming an increasingly common feature.

However, the battery specs of the Iconia Tab A100 series are far from impressive, and at roughly 5 hours, much less than the iPad and other Android devices.  “The floor on battery life for tablets has been set by Apple at 10 hours, and unless someone can reset this expectation, it will be a critical weakness for any tablet regardless of size.  I think it’s a design mistake for Acer to miss it.” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group in an interview with TechNewsWorld.

According to Enderle’s analysis of the spec sheet, it looks like Acer are concentrating their marketing towards women.  “Women are the ideal target because they have purses to carry the devices in and are more likely to be hooked on casual games than men are,” said Enderle, although I am unsure where he gets this data from.
