Ground breaking double lung transplant operation performed

LONDON: A Manchester hospital has carried out a double lung transplant on a cystic fibrosis patient whose life was threatened by a fungal infection.

Dubliner Becky Jones, 20, was airlifted to Wythenshawe Hospital in late May for the operation, after spending more than a year on a waiting list.

World's oldest person dies in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO: A Brazilian woman recognized as the oldest person in the world has died at the age of 114, local media reported Tuesday.

Maria Gomes Valentim was certified in May as the world's oldest person, edging past US woman Besse Cooper, who is 48 days younger, according to Guinness World Records.

Turtles crossing runway cause New York flight delays

NEW YORK: Flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport were delayed shortly on Wednesday when about 150 diamondback terrapin turtles were spotted crossing a runway, authorities said.

The reptiles were trying to get to the other side of the runway to lay eggs on the sandy shores of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which borders the airport.

PARIS: Plans have been unveiled for the Hypermach SonicStar, a business jet which will be capable of a top speed of 2,664 mph, making it twice as fast as Concorde. The jet will fly at 62,000ft allowing passengers to see the curvature of the earth. Hypermach claims its SonicStar aircraft will be so quick that travelling from London to New York will take just two hours. A trip from New York to Sydney which takes 20 hours on a commercial airliner will take just 5 hours on the SonicStar.

WASHINGTON: Scientists say they've finally discovered why smokers tend to gain some weight when they kick the habit.

It turns out that nicotine can rev up brain cells that normally signal people to stop eating when they're full, researchers report in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

The weight connection isn't huge: On average, quitters gain less than 10 pounds. Still, it's a worry that many smokers cite when asked why they don't try to quit. Now the question is whether the discovery might lead to better treatments to help them quit without worrying about weight.

More evidence air pollution may be a heart risk

NEW YORK: Day-to-day spikes in air pollution seem to be followed by an uptick in hospital admissions for heart attack, a new study in Italy finds.

The findings, reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology, add to evidence that high-pollution days may trigger heart attacks in some people.

And, like other studies, the new one suggests that the elderly and people with existing heart or lung disease are most vulnerable.
