'world's first' 3D smartphone (Glasses-free 3D)

LG unveils 'world's first' 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D, and its partner, the Optimus Pad

LG has unveiled the world's first full 3D smartphone, called the Optimus 3D, alongside a new tablet at an event on the sidelines of Barcelona's Mobile World Congress.

LG Electronics mobile communications general manager Nathan Dunn said the LG Optimus 3D, which features a 4.3-inch 3D screen that can be seen with the naked eye, would launch in Australia in June or July.

The phone comes preloaded with three 3D games including Let's Golf 2 and Asphalt 6, and will also screen 3D movies and capture 3D photos with two camera lenses on the rear of the phone.

"This is the perfect time to be launching a glassless 3D screen and to get it across the line,''

"Soon 100 per cent of postpaid phone purchases will be smartphones and this also signals to the market that LG is back in the tech space.''

The South Korean electronics company's offering drew large crowds eager to give it a test run at the Mobile World Congress.

The screen produces the illusion of depth without the need for special glasses and a pair of 5-megapixel lenses for taking 3D photos and video.

The phone must be held at the proper distance and angle in order for the viewer to perceive depth, much like Nintendo's 3DS handheld game console, which is based on a similar screen technology.

Glasses-free 3D is easier to achieve with small screens than with TV-size ones.

"For users to be able to create content will be paramount to reach a critical mass in 3D content," said Daniel Hernandez, LG's director of product marketing in Europe.

"We believe this phone will act as a catalyst to create the 3D mobile industry."

In order to make it easier for consumers to share 3D content online, LG said it had struck a partnership with YouTube.

The Optimus runs on Google's Android operating system.

The South Korean firm also unveiled a 3D tablet computer at the show overnight, called the Optimus Pad, though users will have to wear blue and red glasses to see images in 3D on its 8.9-inch screen.
